Memorial Cup The 1921 final featured the NHL's next great star in Howie Morenz of the Stratford Midgets. Stratford met the Western Champions the Winnipeg Falcons in Toronto on March 24 and 26 in what turned out to be a highly competitive two game total goal series. The Falcons skated to a 9-2 first game win but only managed a two goal win as the squad from Stratford, with Morenz posting the hat trick, winning 7-2 in the second game. The Regina Victorias having beaten the Calgary Beavers 11-6 in a two-game, total-goal series traveleed to Winnipeg to play the Winnipeg Falcons. The first game was played March 15, the Falcons winning 5-3 and wrapping up the series with a 3-1 victory on March 17th. The Falcons met the Fort William YMCA in the Western Canadian final. The Winnipeg team won the first game in Fort William 9-3 on March 20. One night later, the Falcons wrapped it up with an 11-4 victory, giving them the series by an aggregate of 20-7. The Stratford Midgets, featuring Howie Morenz, won the Eastern Canadian title on March 19 by beating Lower Canada College, the Quebec champions, 13-5 in a sudden-death game.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
